Oscar C. Dunn
Rotary Environmental Center
The Oscar C. Dunn Rotary Environmental Center is a great place for children to learn about the beautiful world around us while having a fun time as well. As we would expect from a center located on the grounds of Camp ASCCA, the Environmental Center takes a hands-on approach to learning. Camp ASCCA is actually primarily for disabled children, but the Environmental Center is open to all.
When visiting the center, children move from room to room, with each space being designated for different types of activities. In the central room, children learn about the different facets of the environment, such as animals and weather patterns. All plants and animals featured in the center are native to Alabama. In the experiment room, kids engage in the hands-on projects they love so much, and there is also an activity/conference room with a screen and projector.
The activities are not limited to the building alone, however. The center makes good use of its location on Lake Martin to hold all sorts of great outdoors experiences as well.
In addition to a successful past, the Environmental Center seems to have a bright future ahead of it as well. Their next big step will be to add a bird observation area. There will be a wide variety of animals to watch: everything from chickadees to great horned owls. The folks at the Environmental Center have many other ideas for improvement, all of which are sure to keep it a fresh and exiting place for years to come.
